Bob's Bunker Page 63

The concrete was poured and finished by about 10AM in the morning. Around 4PM in the afternoon another crew arrived to saw the green (hard but not fully cured) concrete. The concrete is sawed to provide a spot for the concrete to crack. Concrete shrinks as it cures and sawing a 1/8" wide by 1" deep groove into the concrete causes a weak area and when the concrete shrinks the concreete will crack at the point where the saw cuts are made. In days past, the concrete mason would use a parting trowel to make large grooves in the wet concrete which served the same purpose. Sawing grooves looks much nicer and leaves the surface of the concrete more uniform looking.
