At this stage the excavation is nearing the bottom depth of 12 feet. This photo shows the stratification of the soil layers. The top 3 feet is fertile top soil over a layer of compacted loam. Below the 3 foot level is a layer of fine compated silt, and below that is Lake Michigan beach sand from the 5 foot level all the way down to 13 feet.
