This photo shows the tops of the 20 foot long "I beam" piles that were dropped into the holes which were bored by the machine in the previous photo. The horizontal steel chanel connecting the tops of all the piles is called a "whaler" and serves to reinforce the tops of the piles. Later on you will see that several 35 foot long I beams will run across the excavation from one side to the other to keep the piles from caving inward from the forces of the soil in the neighboring yards.
