The drilling rig arrives. This soil boring machine will be used to drill 35 holes, 18 feet deep and 9" in diamater. A 20' long 6" steel "I" beam will be lowered into each drilled hole to support the shoring of the excavation. Prior to starting the construction phase, the soil was tested by drilling test holes. The results of the tests showed that the soil under my back yard was almost all Lake Michigan sand from the Ice Age, when Lake Michigan covered my back yard many thousands of years ago. Because the soil consists of sand, the excavation will need to be stabilized with "pilings" and "wood lagging" to hold back the neighboring yards from caving into the excavation for my project.
